Case Study: Full Spectrum Doula
Skills at a glance: Project management, communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and advocacy.
I completed my degree in Women and Gender Studies and decided to complete a degree in Health Policy and Management after spending time learning and researching Black maternal health outcomes, the medical-industrial complex, and the historical violence against and control of Black women’s bodies and reproductive lives.
I became the solution and people trusted me to manage their experience.
The Actions
I learned that Black women have been able to be resilient in the face of medical violence with the help of doulas and decided to expand my lived experience doing care and support work by doing a full-spectrum doula training with Ancient Song Doula collective. I continued thought leadership by participating in an Abortion Doula specific course and Postpartum Doula specific Course with Birth Advocacy Doula as well as a mentorship program with Conscious Birth Collective.
The Results
With these trainings, I was able to step into the role of supporting and managing birthing people’s experiences and the reproductive lives and autonomy of people. I have provided prenatal education visits, hospital advocacy and emotional support, and postpartum care
