My focus on reproductive health as a doula and my role at the OCRCC put me in community with the amazing staff at UNC’s Student Wellness where I was connected with Caress Roach. When I met Caress, she spoke of the need for a student-led group on campus that could talk about the sexual health topics that staff is barred from addressing. These conversations, though taboo, can increase awareness and decrease violence within the community.
Understanding that potential, I co-founded the Pleasure Activists, a registered student organization, that is inspired by Adrienne Maree Brown’s book of the same name.
I created a movement.
The Actions
As co-founder and manager of the organization, I did outreach and partnership building with other campus organizations, executed fundraisers and funding applications, designed the digital presence of the organization by creating a website, social media account, and digital content, led and created workshops for students, and led several events.
The Results
This organization was and continues to be a success with increased traffic to our website and social media channels, secured funding for all events from the Student Government, and increased membership. It serves as a safe space for students to explore topics they are curious about but do not have the option to do so.
